Wars and conflicts have increased worldwide in recent years. The number of fatalities
is rising sharply, particularly in Ukraine and the Middle East. These wars
demonstrate the increasing military use of new and cutting-edge technologies. Indeed, technology has the potential to fundamentally change the conventional way of waging war. At the same time, the familiar threat posed by unconventional
weapons of mass destruction remains and is even increasing in some regions.
In order to fully understand the impact of technology on war and peace, research and findings from the natural and engineering sciences and the social sciences must be integrated. This is the task of the newly created Cluster for
Natural and Technical Science Arms Control Research (CNTR).
